Ghana Wins First All Africa Tournament
The first All Africa Amputee Soccer Tournament got underway Friday, February 9, with opening ceremonies and opening matches in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Published reports said s many as 10,000 spectators crowded the National Stadium in Freetown to witness the ground-breaking event. Teams said to be participating include Sierra Leone, Angola, Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia and Tanzania. Jim Frere, Amputee Football Liaison / Development Officer for Africa, said The tournament is being held with the intention of putting the word "pride" into disabled sport within Africa. He said the tournament would also demonstrate to sports organizations outside the region that such tournaments can be organized with efficiency and provide a high standard of skill/stamina and spectator entertainment. Turkey to Host
World Amputee Football Federation Secretary General Dr. Dr Kamil Yazicioglu, has confirmed the 2007 Amputee Soccer World Cup will be held November 8 - 18 in Antalya, Turkey.
