Faces at the Tournament
The matches were the centerpiece, of course. The action, the power, the speed, the intensity. The demonstration that this game is a world class sport in and of itself. The press saw that - much to its own amazement - as did the spectators who came tentatively and left true believers. But the matches were only the center piece. The accent pieces around the game were the people who played the game, and the people who made the games possible. Old friends, and old friends we hadn't met yet. And with all due respect to the dignitaries, players and volunteers, one stands out - Robin Gordon. Robin was the heartbeat of the tournament. She made it happen. She made the phone calls, organized the volunteers, developed the strategy and attended to the details. With the delicate balance of loving kindness and a whip and a chair she brought together a major international tournament in just eight weeks. A prodigious accomplishment by any measure. Words just don't seem adequate, Robin. But we heard it said in every language of every team, and every dialect of every player, in public, on the buses and in private - Thank You, Robin Gordon. Speciba. Thank you for the games. |
